As capital of Azerbaijan, Baku is the lowest lying capital city in the world at 28 metres below sea level. A city founded on oil, Baku is also known as the ‘City of Winds’. It is the biggest city in the Caucasus region and the largest urban base on the shores of the Caspian Sea. In recent decades the city has seen a rapid expansion and an increase in foreign visitors, meaning that there are plenty of modern hotels to choose from.
Built for the 2015 European Games, Baku Olympic Stadium is the biggest stadium in the Caucasus region. With a capacity of 68,700 and a distinct modern appearance, it is Azerbaijan’s foremost arena for sporting events. As well as being home to the Azerbaijan national football team, the stadium will host the 2019 UEFA Europa League Final.
